Badlands Family Photos Guide

Make your vacation to Medora, North Dakota even more memorable with Badlands family photos that capture your family’s adventure together.

Badlands Family Photos Guide

There are plenty of beautiful places for family photos, but the North Dakota Badlands makes a session feel even more memorable. With the colorful rock formations, trails to explore, wide open views, and beautiful skies, it’s a landscape that is absolutely a must-see.

Whether you’re already planning a trip to Medora or you’re local and looking for somewhere unique, the Badlands crerates an incredible backdrop for documenting this season of life with your family. Kids have room to explore instead of standing in one spot smiling at a camera, parents get to slow down for an evening together, and the photos end up feeling much more like an experience than a traditional portrait session.

If you’re considering family photos in the Badlands, here’s everything you should know before planning your session.

Why Plan an Adventurous Family Session in the Badlands

One of my favorite things about photographing families in the Badlands is that it never feels overly posed. The landscape naturally encourages everyone to move around, explore, and simply spend time together. Instead of worrying about perfectly behaved kids for an hour, your session becomes more like a family adventure with beautiful photos along the way.

The scenery is also incredibly diverse. Within a short drive, you can find stunning overlooks, colorful buttes, rolling prairie, rugged cliffs, peaceful trails, and open fields. That variety means every gallery feels a little different, even when sessions happen in the same general area.

If you’re visiting Medora, adding family photos to your trip is an easy way to preserve memories beyond the typical vacation snapshots. Medora has so much charm, from the small downtown to nearby hiking trails and scenic drives, making it a destination families naturally spend time exploring together.

Just outside of town, Theodore Roosevelt National Park takes everything to another level. The park is home to some of the most recognizable landscapes in North Dakota, along with bison, wild horses, prairie dogs, and incredible sunsets. While wildlife isn’t guaranteed during your session, simply being surrounded by this landscape creates photos that feel timeless and uniquely North Dakota.

It’s also worth mentioning that adventurous doesn’t have to mean difficult. Most family sessions involve short walks to beautiful viewpoints rather than long hikes. The goal is to create an experience that’s enjoyable for everyone, including young kids.

Where to Plan Family Photos in the Badlands

There are two main areas I recommend for Badlands family sessions, and each offers something a little different.

Theodore Roosevelt National Park

If you’re dreaming of those iconic Badlands views, Theodore Roosevelt National Park is hard to beat. The South Unit near Medora has many different overlooks, scenic pull-offs, and trails where you can see the layered rock formations the park is known for. Many locations require only a short walk from the parking area, which makes them easy to access for families with young children.

The scenery changes constantly throughout the park, so it’s easy to create a gallery with a lot of variety without spending hours driving between locations. One thing to keep in mind is that a National Park entrance pass is required to enter the park. Depending on the exact location we choose, there may also be photography permit requirements, so it’s always a good idea to plan ahead.

Because this is an active national park, wildlife always has the right of way. If bison or wild horses happen to wander nearby, we’ll simply give them plenty of space and adjust our plans if needed.

Medora

If you’re looking for a mix of beautiful scenery with a slightly more relaxed feel, Medora is another wonderful option.

The area surrounding town also has plenty of scenic overlooks, rolling hills, dirt roads, and prairie landscapes without needing to spend your entire session inside the national park. It’s also incredibly convenient if you’re already staying in Medora during your vacation.

One of the things I love about photographing families here is how easy it is to combine several different locations into one session. We can capture the rugged Badlands scenery while also finding quieter areas that are perfect for letting kids run around and be themselves. Medora also tends to feel a little less busy than some of the popular overlooks inside the park, especially during peak travel season.

When to Take Badlands Family Photos

The Badlands is an incredible place to plan family photos, especially if you’re looking for plenty of rugged landscape, and a touch of Old West character. The most popular time to plan a session here is during the summer months, typically from June through early September. During this time, the weather is warm, the hills and valleys of the Badlands turn vibrant green, and wildflowers begin to appear across the landscape. The longer daylight hours also allow much more flexibility with timing, and nothing beats the summer sunsets. While spring and fall can offer their own quiet charm, summer is when Medora feels the most lively, with the scenery at its peak and the town fully open for visitors.
