Backyard Wedding in Mandaree, North Dakota

Set in Mandaree, North Dakota, this backyard wedding honored the couple’s connection to the Three Affiliated Tribes with heartfelt details.

Backyard Wedding in Mandaree, North Dakota

There was something really special about the simplicity of Kalee and Jesse’s wedding day. Held in her mom’s backyard near the Fort Berthold Reservation in Mandaree, North Dakota, the entire day felt incredibly personal and meaningful from start to finish. The weather brought soft rain and cloudy skies, which honestly made everything feel even more intimate. Wisteria hung down from the trees around the ceremony space, flower dudes tossed petals down the aisle, and a teepee stood nearby as a beautiful nod to their roots and community.

Kalee and Jesse have been together since high school, which made the whole day feel even more emotional to witness. They are both members of the Three Affiliated Tribes and incredibly proud of that, and I loved how much they honored that in their day. So many of the details carried deep meaning for their families, too. Kalee wore earrings that her mom had beaded for her that very morning, and Jesse’s family gifted the couple a buffalo rug during the celebration. Even their wedding rings felt completely unique and personal, made by Hyo Silver. Every part of the day reflected who they are, their connection to the Three Affiliated Tribes, and the people who helped shape their story along the way.

Why Consider a Backyard Wedding

Backyard weddings feel different in the best way. It usually ends up feeling a lot more relaxed and personal than a traditional venue wedding because you’re celebrating in a place that already means something to you or your family. Guests tend to settle in more naturally, everyone feels comfortable, and the whole day often feels less rushed. You also have so much freedom to make the space your own, whether that means hanging lights in the trees, bringing in unique details, or creating a setup that actually reflects your personalities instead of trying to fit into a venue’s style.

Backyard weddings also leave room for some of the most meaningful moments. Family members are often more involved, sentimental details come together naturally, and the atmosphere feels warm in a way that’s hard to recreate anywhere else. Even imperfect weather or muddy grass somehow ends up becoming part of the story. There’s just something really special about gathering everyone you love in a place that already feels like home.

What You Need for a Backyard Wedding

There are some logistics that you need to consider if you are planning a backyard wedding in order for it to run smoothly. Here are some things to keep in mind!

  • A solid rain plan. Even if you’re dreaming of an outdoor ceremony, having a tent or backup indoor option will save so much stress if the weather changes unexpectedly.
  • Enough seating and tables for guests to actually relax and enjoy themselves. Rentals usually end up being one of the biggest pieces of a backyard wedding.
  • Good lighting once the sun goes down. String lights, lanterns, candles, or even just extra outdoor lighting can completely change the atmosphere and make everything feel cozy.
  • Bathrooms. Depending on your guest count, you may want to rent portable restrooms or a restroom trailer so things stay comfortable for everyone.
  • Parking plans. Backyard weddings can get crowded quickly, so figuring out where guests will park ahead of time makes the day run way smoother.
  • A catering setup that works for the space. Some caterers need access to power, water, or prep areas, so it’s good to think through logistics early.
  • Extension cords and power sources. It sounds small, but between DJs, lighting, catering, and vendors charging equipment, power becomes a huge deal fast.
  • Comfortable getting-ready spaces. Even a simple room with good natural light, mirrors, and enough space for everyone can make the morning feel so much more relaxed.
  • Trash and cleanup plans. This is one of the least glamorous parts, but having people assigned to cleanup or rentals arranged ahead of time makes a huge difference afterward.
  • A coordinator or someone helping run the day. Backyard weddings usually involve more moving pieces than people expect, so having someone manage timing and logistics lets everyone actually enjoy the day.
  • Personal touches that make it feel like you. Backyard weddings are honestly one of the best ways to create a wedding that feels meaningful and personal, so don’t be afraid to include family traditions, handmade details, cultural elements, or spaces that already hold memories for you.
